Sakāskohc High School
Overlooking Big Chief Park in Onion Lake Cree Nation, Sakāskohc High School’s siting integrates the building within the hillside location to create a dramatic two-storied massing on the ‘walk-out’ lower elevation while offering a friendlier one storey massing on the top side main entrance.
The new school features general and specialized classrooms, a large cafeteria/student commons, purpose-built practical and applied arts spaces, a dedicated black-box 400- seat lecture/ performance theatre with retractable seating and a full double-court gymnasium with an elevated two-lane running track.
The various curvilinear shapes are used throughout both the interior and exterior. Plans and elevation were developed in limited but strategic locations to soften parts of the exterior shape while functionally bridging large program block elements of the plans to provide an exciting and well-functioning circulation experience.
Interior and exterior materiality is intentionally muted and natural, in hopes of complimenting the surrounding environment and aging more timelessly. Features include generous Tyndall stone facades and exposed glulam structure around the entrances, interior theatre, and cultural rooms. Natural face brick and wood-looking phenolic siding used elsewhere provides a durable and long-lasting envelope assembly while maintaining its appearance over the decades ahead.
