The Saskatchewan Forest Centre, located in downtown Prince Albert within the heart of Western Canada’s Boreal forest region, was established to serve as a hub for forestry technology, research, and innovation. This multi-functional facility houses Forest Centre staff, various Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management (SERM) departments, industry representatives, and forestry-related consulting firms. The building’s warm character is defined by its extensive use of forest-related products, including a unique wood timber structure, wood paneling, trim finishes, and natural materials on the atrium floor.

The central two-story atrium takes center stage both visually and functionally, providing a well-lit space with abundant natural light streaming through clerestory windows. This impressive area serves as a general orientation space, meeting and relaxation area, and a public space for large gatherings and presentations. The building design incorporates innovative technology for heating, ventilation, cooling, and overall operations. An underground parking garage, relatively unique to Prince Albert, along with a loading dock, enhances the building’s functionality. The external courtyard, designed to integrate with the downtown business district, is surrounded by local landscaping and offers space for various outdoor activities.

The Saskatchewan Forest Centre is noteworthy for being the first building in the province to achieve LEED Gold Certification. It demonstrates sustainability through the use of recycled waste from demolished on-site buildings, wood products from the local forest industry, and energy-efficient features like radiant heating and cooling. Water-efficient landscaping, low-emitting materials, and an emphasis on indigenous community involvement during construction further showcase the facility’s commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement.
