The Yuasni Tipi Family Treatment Centre, located on the lands of the Wahpeton Dakota Nation near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, is nestled within the jack pine forest and in close proximity to the Spruce River. The word Yuasni means “healing” in the Dakota language. The site holds cultural significance for the Wahpeton Dakota Nation.
The Centre is the home of the Sakwatamo Family Treatment Program and offers counselling programming and services with a significant focus on supporting family wellness, cultural knowledge sharing, life skills development, education and awareness, and land-based therapeutic activities. The facility includes six family suites with two bedrooms and two individual suites, as well as a cultural room located at the centre of the facility that will be used for holistic practice, smudging, and ceremonies. It also has two classrooms for continuing education and a multi-purpose room for physical activity, large group gatherings and programming.
Designed with a muted palette and natural wood elements, the lodge seamlessly blends into its surroundings. The entrance doors face east, inviting the warmth of the rising sun into the Lobby and Dining Room, where families can gather for breakfast. At the heart of the building lies the Cultural Room, a space dedicated to holistic practices, smudging, and ceremonies. The layout thoughtfully separates family suites and client spaces in the south wing from administrative and counseling areas in the north wing, fostering both privacy and community.
